"Black Horse of Culver," a fictional children's book by Helen Orr Watson (who wrote numerous animal-related stories for children, many of them military in setting, during this period), published by Houghton Mifflin, c1950. It centers on a young cadet's first year at Culver and his involvement in the Black Horse Troop, and was probably intended most especially for boys of the era, though girls with a horse fascination would probably welcome the detail and attention paid to horses and riding in the book.
