March 20th Board Meeting


Board Meeting March 20, 2012

Time: 7:00 pm -8:20 pm

Place: Library Large Meeting Room

Members: Joan Bess, Joyce Greeson, Alfred Nyby, Melanie Robertson, Carol Saft, Peg Schuldt, Jim Hahn presiding

Public Comment

presented information about Knox Boxes, a security system that allows entry by fire fighters, police officers and emergency personnel without damage to the facility

Garden Court Senior Living facility has already installed the Knox Box system

Local fire fighters and police have access to the key

$800 estimated one-time fee for each box and installation depending upon difficulty of installation

CUTPL should consider two boxes (one per entrance door)

Kevin will take the issue concerning local government agencies each installing a Knox Box to the Town Planning Commission

Report from the Antiquarian & Historical Society: Jim Sawhook and Rachel Meade

Announced an open community meeting on Sat., May 12 at 10:00 (location TBA)

Reasons for this meeting are:

  1. reaffirm local museum support
  2. restructuring of the board of directors
  3. future location of museum

Ultimate goal: to have 12 or more local persons to develop a plan and serve as a liaison

Rachel announced the youth involvement plan to include items on Indiana history presented to Cub Scouts and Daisy Scouts

Museum has had traveling exhibits from the State Museum

April 18 presentation on Indiana through a Mapmaker's Eye

Future plans include a Civil War exhibit and resource

Finance Committee Report: Colleen McCarty

Insurance will be $5095 in 2012

Inventory of building contents for insurance appraisal will cost $9000

CUTPL Bond provides an Operations and Reserve Fund currently at $26,000 which could pay for the inventory and several other expenses

Fire Marshall Inspection resulted in CUTPL being cited as needing annual alarm and exit signs testing For $450 Schmidt Communications of Bremen did the required testing in March, we passed and received our certification for 2012 from the Fire Marshall

Policy Committee: Colleen McCarty

Vacation policy was tabled until April meeting when all board members will be present

Director's Report: Colleen McCarty

As announced in January, CUTPL participating in Marshall Co. "One Book, One Town" project. The book is Shiloh, by Shelby Foote. CUTPL will host discussion groups on Wed., April 4 at 6:30 and Sat., April 28 at 1:30 led by Jim Faulkner

As part of program, Margaret Carter will present "Women in the Civil War" to Culver Middle School students on April 20 and "What you Didn't Learn About the Civil War In School" at CUTPL on April 18

there are 99 Indiana Libraries in Evergreen and 60 of those libraries in Overdrive

Alfred asked about Overdrive difficulties. We are paid until October but we may want to reconsider our participation since several book publishers are reluctant to offer their publications for purchase to libraries. There are also marketing and privacy issues involved, particularly with Kindle eBooks.

Colleen, Jim H. and Alfred attended a Town Council meeting for Main Street merchants and owners/tenants to view information about the federally funded Main Street improvement program which will include sidewalk, lighting and curb improvements on the Main St. side of the Library

Feb. stats: 5280 visitors (vs. 4910 in Feb. 2011) and 4502 circulations (vs. 4033 in Feb. 2011). Leap Day could account for part of the increase

All Library staff members and volunteers now wear identification badges while on duty

CUTPL Board members received "Library Bucks" with stats for them, as library advocates, to share with others to help raise awareness of the economic and overall value of the Public Library system
